The awkward moment Meghan Markle tried to make a private joke with her sister-in-law Kate at the Trooping the Colour has since resurfaced online.

The Duchess of Sussex's jibe was met with a "yawning silence" by the Princess of Wales while they both stood on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Prince Harry alluded to it in his book Spare, released this year, in which he said the silence "threatened to swallow us all whole".

The event in June 2018 marked one of Harry and Meghan's first public appearances as newlyweds.

The Duke of Sussex wrote: "Everyone present was in a good mood, upbeat. But then: Kate asked Meg what she thought of her first Trooping the Colour. And Meg joked: Colourful. And a yawning silence threatened to swallow us all whole."

The moment has re-emerged because, just last month, King Charles was joined by his wife Queen Camilla, son Prince William and daughter-in-law Kate at this year's Trooping the Colour. Harry and Meghan were absent and thought to be home in Montecito, California where they live with their two children Archie and Lilibet.

The Duke and Duchess have previously attended the Trooping of the Colour to celebrate the late Queen Elizabeth II's birthday on more than one occasion. In 2019, Meghan looked uncomfortable during a balcony appearance at the ceremony.

And in 2022, the Duke and Duchess flew over to the UK for Queen Elizabeth II's last Trooping the Colour, which coincided with Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The royals did not make an appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony to watch the flypast, but the Duchess was spotted enjoying a sweet interaction with Peter Phillips' daughters, Savannah and Isla, and Zara Tindall's children, Mia and Lena at the windows.

Trooping the Colour falls on the third Saturday of June and marks the monarch's official birthday – the King's actual birthday on 14 November. This year's parade was King Charles' first Trooping event as reigning monarch.

Earlier it was reported, that Meghan was wrong about her first impression of Kate, according to a pal of the Princess of Wales. A friend insisted the Princess of Wales greets everyone with a "big hug and kiss".

Kate's friend said she is "warm and friendly", denying claims of formality made by the Duchess of Sussex in the Netflix show Harry & Meghan. In the episode, Meghan said she was "surprised" by the behind-the-scenes formality of members of the royal family.

Recalling a dinner party with Prince William and Kate during the early days of her relationship with Harry, when the two couples lived just a few doors apart in Kensington Palace, Meghan said: "When Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, they came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot.

"I was a hugger. I've always been a hugger, I didn't realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits. I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside.

"There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and go 'You can relax now', but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me."

However, in an interview with People, an unnamed friend of the Princess of Wales denied the claims, saying she is "a big hugger". The friend added: "She is warm and friendly and greets everyone with a big hug and kiss. It comes naturally to her to be like that."
