Wrexham fury as locals told match tickets are for international fans only
Local Wrexham supporters have been told that the remaining tickets for their club’s second home game back in the Football League are being held for international fans.
In a controversial move that is set to widen a rift among the fanbase, the League Two side confirmed that the game against Walsall on August 15 was “sold out for UK members” but there “are a small number of International Members Tickets still available for the game.”
And that has led to significant criticism from fans on social media who believe a new ticketing scheme is unfair.
One fan posted on Twitter: “When a Wrexham FC Member living 9 miles away is unable to purchase a ticket but someone living 1000+ miles away may still purchase one then this should not be something you, as a club, should be pleased with.”
Another user replied: “I’m a bit bored of this whole Wrexham thing now. I’m glad the team is doing well, but they have totally 'sold out' on this TV series popularity contest stuff. Why would international people want to visit Wrexham... come on ? Let the local fans have the tickets.”
Ryan Reynolds mispronounces name of new Wrexham signing in hilarious video
Last week Mirror Football revealed that there are growing concerns around whether the club’s rapid growth of popularity under their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney is leading to the local community becoming disconnected.
Among the complaints has been the launch of a reframed membership scheme where fans have been asked to stump up £30 for the ability to enter a ticketing ballot. The club said that 150 tickets will be available for each home game for UK members, 75 for those from abroad and the idea also means season ticket holders, who have seen prices rise, will now only be entitled to 70% of away tickets.

(Matthew Ashton - AMA/Getty Images)"We have and will always listen to fans about all matters relating to the club," a club spokesman told Mirror Football. "The decision to increase the cost of membership was taken after an assessment of the benefits that fans would receive including access to the priority period to purchase tickets and the new ballot, ticket exchange processes we have put in place.”
The first team is currently touring the United States as part of a money-spinning pre-season and Phil Parkinson’s side will face a youthful Manchester United side tomorrow having lost 5-0 to a Chelsea fringe side and beaten LA Galaxy's reserves 4-0 last week.
They will also face the Philadelphia Union B team before returning five days before their League Two return. Wrexham are favourites to win promotion from the fourth tier and open up with a fixture against MK Dons at the Racecourse Ground on August 5.
