Bruno Fernandes is said to still be fuming with Manchester United icon Gary Neville following his bruising criticism last term.

The former defender tore into the Portuguese playmaker in the aftermath of the Red Devils’ shocking 7-0 humiliation at the hands of Liverpool. Speaking after the game, Neville said: “They have not been epitomised more than Bruno Fernandes, who has been embarrassing - a shambles - in this game.

“Bruno Fernandes is stood in the centre circle with his arms raised saying ‘Why isn’t it me coming off?’ Honestly. I think some of his behaviour in the second half has been a disgrace.”

Those words appear to have been ringing in Fernandes’ ears since. He hit back at the criticism back in April with a shrouded dig.

"I kind of understand behind that but I can't control that,” he claimed. “We all know pundits have to say something to keep their work.

“The more bad things they say, the more work they get, sometimes. We all have to live with that but for me, it's about my team-mates being okay with that. Whenever they are not, I would like them to tell me so I can calm myself down.

"Most of the things that were said after that game were complete lies. Because I waved my arms, they [assumed] that I said something that I didn't say. The pundits always want to say something to get attention and credit from the people outside. Sometimes they say something to say."

His frustration now appears to have grown even further. According to The Sun, Fernandes is still furious with Neville. That anger could potentially lead to the midfielder not engaging with the Red Devils icon during any pre or post-match interviews when on Sky Sports duty.

The 28-year-old appears likely to be at the forefront of media work during the coming season after being named as United’s new club captain. He replaces Harry Maguire, who saw the armband taken off of him by Erik ten Hag last week.

Speaking about that decision, Fernandes said: “He [Ten Hag] wanted to do it in front of the whole group. Everyone knew already about the situation with Harry, but no-one knew who would be the next captain. So he did it in a team meeting with everyone together.

“Harry gave me congratulations and said he is really happy for me. I understand his position is not the best at the moment. It has to be difficult for him, but he said congratulations to me and I’m happy about that because we’ve always had a good relationship.”

Ahead of his first season as United captain, Fernandes has found some promising form. He scored in the 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the US.
