Surprising detail Prince George's surprising detail about Kate behind the scenes of George birthday snap' as in she didn't take it for once

Prince George turns 10 today and keeping in line with tradition, an official portrait has been released - but there is one thing that is different.

In the photo, George looks relaxed and happy wearing a checked shirt and trousers. However, the big difference is that this year's photo was not taken by his mum Kate, but a photographer.

The photo was taken by Millie Pilkington. The Princess of Wales has often taken photos of her children past birthdays.

In this year's photo, there is a striking similarity between the second in line to the throne and his father, Prince William, at the same age. And if his childhood dreams come true, George might follow in his dad’s footsteps and become a pilot in the RAF.

However, there is one tradition that Kate will keep up this year - and it requires her to stay up late.

That's because once her little ones have gone to bed, Kate sets about making them their very own birthday cake. And as it is George's birthday today, it's likely to be a late night in the kitchen for the princess as she whips up the birthday treat.

Kate revealed her adorable tradition in 2019 when she and William appeared on a special BBC programme with baking expert Mary Berry called A Berry Royal Christmas.

In it, she spoke of her love for baking and told Mary that when it comes to her children's birthdays: "I love making the cake."

She added: "It's become a bit of a tradition that I stay up 'til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing and I make far too much. But I love it."

It comes as experts say George is mature for his age, as his parents prepare him for a life in public. In May, he became the youngest future King to take part in a Coronation service.

Author Tom Quinn, who wrote Gilded Youth about royal children, cited a palace official who described George as “almost unnaturally mature”.

He added: “George is already aware that he is treated differently from his brother and sister because he is in the direct line of succession.”

Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, said he expects George to choose a career in the military. He said: “If you are one day going to be Commander-in-Chief, you need a bit of military experience. So I find it difficult to believe George won’t do the same.”

George plays rugby, tennis and football at his school, Lambrook, near Ascot.
