Emmerdale villagers left reeling over surprise exit as actor leaves soap role

Emmerdale aired an emotional exit on the ITV soap on Thursday night, and one that several villagers did not see coming. The exit decision had been kept under wraps from residents until moments before the character in question made his departure.

Arthur Thomas' love interest and fellow teen Marshall Hamston decided to move away with his aunt and her family for a fresh start. Having agreed with his aunt that it would be for the best, he failed to tell boyfriend Arthur or his family who he had been staying with for months.

Eventually Marshall confided in Arthur's stepfather Jai Sharma, sharing he wanted to live with his aunt and that he no longer wanted to be with Arthur. When he told him the news, Arthur broke down in tears, clearly heartbroken.

Arthur's mother Laurel also found out and waved Marshall off, gutted to see him go. She, Jai and Arthur all said their goodbyes, in shock that he was going and so soon.

Neither of them had known that he planned to move away or was feeling the way that he was. So to hear he was leaving and on that very day left them shocked, but they just wanted the best for him.

As Arthur and Marshall hugged it out, sharing they would miss each other, Marshall left the village for good with his aunt and his cousin. Actor Max Fletcher has left the role it would seem, with no current spoilers suggesting a return.

It comes after the reports that another character will bow out of the show later this year, 25 years after their debut on the show.

Actress Samantha Giles is reportedly quitting the show as Bernice Blackstock, amid recent scenes for the character. It isn't the first time Bernice has fled the village, while it may not be the last either.

According to reports, Bernice will depart the show later this year in a storyline not yet confirmed. It's claimed the door will be left open for her to return, while she has had four stints on the show and three exits since her arrival in 1998.

A source said to The Sun: “Bernice Blackstock has been in and out of Emmerdale village more than they change the barrels at The Woolpack.

“She’s always welcomed back with open arms by ITV and fans alike, but it’s now becoming a bit of a running joke. It wouldn’t pay to bet on whether Samantha will one day be back, but for now she will leave the soap later this year.”

Just weeks ago Naomi Walters also left the village too after a year on the show. After being given some money by Vinny Dingle, Naomi decided to follow her dreams and left for Ibiza.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
