A beach with golden sands, crystal-clear waters and a vibrant atmosphere is the best in the UK, according to a new study.

Weymouth in Dorset has been tipped as the must-visit staycation spot, in no small part due to its excellent and very clean bathing water that entice tens of thousands of sunseekers in every summer.

Each year great flocks of people make their way down to the southern coastal town to take in the magnificent Georgian seafront set in the heart of the wild Jurassic Coast.

The bay provides shelter and a sense of seclusion for those on the beach, which has gentle sloping sand beds that make it perfect for families looking to safely paddle in the water.

Although the beach is widely loved and gets very busy on warm summer days, its long sweeping sands are big enough that it can feel like the place to be without becoming overcrowded.

The promenade above is buzzing with activity including many that hark back to the Edwardian era of classic British seaside experiences, such as Punch and Judy shows, donkey rides and pedalo hires.

What's particularly pleasant about a trip to Weymouth is its location, close to Poole and Bournemouth, so there's plenty else to see and do if you fancy heading into another town for a bite to eat or a drink.

"I've just been in Weymouth for a few days and have to say I’ve never seen a nicer or better maintained beach anywhere in this country," one happy punter recently wrote on Tripadvisor, where the beach has a 4.5/5 score from close to 6,000 rankings.

Another wrote: "A gorgeous sandy beach. My young kids were thrilled to play in the soft sand. We were lucky to have visited on a sunny day, my daughter enjoyed searching for shells."

Weymouth Beach has also one plaudits for being more wheelchair accessible than many others, with several ramps installed that run to matting on the sand. There are also free to use wheelchairs that can be picked up from the public office near the prominent statue.

An enthused wheelchair user recently wrote: "Omg a beach I can get on finally!! So clean and welcoming lots to see and do along the promenade, but what makes it stand out is its accessibility, especially for wheelchair users.

"They have special platforms going onto the beach that chairs can go along and even better wheelchairs that actually work on the sand that you can hire for free."

While the beach has a good reputation for cleanliness and being well maintained generally, the council lets the seaweed blooms grow and recede naturally when they arrive, so you may find yourself a little tangled on occasion.

It's not the first time Weymouth has taken the top spot in rankings of UK shores. It's already topped the list of the UK's 50 best beaches which looked at factors including cleanliness, accessibility, car parking facilities, lifeguards, whether the beaches are dog-friendly and water quality.

"The bathing — as George III discovered while he was making the seaside fashionable in 1789 — is a delight in a shallow, sandy-bottomed, sheltered bay and dogs are welcome year-round at the pavilion end of the beach," the Sunday Times writes in its review of the beach.

"The Georgian esplanade is the most beautiful backdrop to any urban beach in the country and the facilities, from the sparkling superloos on the prom to the beach wheelchairs, deckchairs, windbreaks and ocean toys, are matched by no other resort in the land — although Tenby, perhaps, comes close."
