Messaging app WhatsApp is reportedly down as thousands of users are reporting problems.

More than 100,000 Brits have been experiencing issues trying to send messages on the encrypted messaging app on Wednesday evening.

The app, which is owned by Facebook and used by around 2billion people worlwide, stopped working and the company says it is currently working to fix the issue.

The majority of issues are over people ability to send and receive messages, leaving many switching the WiFi routers off and on in attempts to get it to work.

But this time it appears its the service itself which is the problem, not individual connections, as a spike of 174,361 complaints were logged on DownDetector to signal the sudden inactivity with the service.

In a tweet earlier, WhatsApp said: "We’re working quickly to resolve connectivity issues with WhatsApp and we’ll update you here as soon as possible."

Both the mobile and desktop browser versions of the service went down at around 9pm.

Many unhappy users have taken to rival social media platform Twitter to vent their frustration at the issues, with WhatsApp the top trending term at time of writing.

One user wrote on Down Detector: "Down in Torbay Devon". Another wrote, "down [in] Cambridgeshire" while a third said, "down in Glasgow"

Some people as of 9.55pm who were facing issues are now seeing messages be sent and arrive.
