Vodafone has launched a new faster social tariff broadband plan for households claiming certain benefits.

The Fibre 2 Essentials bundle is available with speeds of up to 73Mbps for £20 a month.

The standard Fibre 2 package from Vodafone costs £25 a month, meaning those who can get the social tariff will save £5 a month, or £60 a year.

Vodafone already offers a Fibre 1 Essential social tariff, which was announced in October and offers speeds of up to 38Mbps at £12 a month.

Both packages are available for 12 months for those claiming one of these qualifying benefits:

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, said: “Traditionally, if you sign up to a social tariff for your broadband, you often have to take what you’re given - which can mean slower speeds that aren’t entirely suitable for busy households.

“But all households deserve a choice in their broadband package - and so Vodafone’s new Fibre 2 Essentials tariff is a welcome step in the right direction, offering higher speeds of 73Mbps at a monthly cost that is 20% lower than the market rate, for those who are eligible.

“If a social tariff isn’t right for you, try considering what you need from your broadband before locking into a contract.

“This can prevent you from overpaying for data or speeds you don’t need, especially when out of contract and in a position to make a saving by switching providers.”

Ahmed Essam, Vodafone UK CEO, said: “We have led the way in social tariffs, being the first to launch both fixed and mobile connectivity and having the cheapest social broadband product on the market since October last year.

“We have now heard the call for telecoms providers to do more to support people in the cost of living crisis and offer social tariffs that meet the needs of different households, so we are continuing to lead the way by promoting a new faster speed, social broadband tariff to our existing portfolio.

“Connectivity isn’t a luxury; we are doing all we can to make sure everyone can stay connected.”

The Government claims switching to a social tariff could save you up to £180 a year - but many people don't realise these deals exist.

Prices start from £12 a month with Vodafone - but you might also be able to get six months free if you're a jobseeker through TalkTalk.

As well as social tariffs normally being cheaper than standard deals, they also normally don't come with any exit fees.
