To the delight of fans, Major League Soccer decided to bring back 'Goalie Wars', with goalkeepers pelting balls at each other from close range.

The game was first brought to TV screens in the summer of 2001 when the San Jose Earthquakes hosted the All-Star Game at Spartan Stadium, and fans have been calling for its return since. Ahead of the MLS All Stars’ clash against Arsenal at Audi Field in Washington D.C., the league held its yearly Skills Challenge, which involved Goalie Wars.

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale watched the action from the stands and was left on the edge of his seat. Recalling memories of playing the game as a youngster, he said: "Goalie wars, so many memories growing up.

“I used to play it individuals, two v. twos. Twice a week, we use to play from the age of 10 to 16. It’s the first time I’ve seen it for a long time, and they put on a good show as well. But yeah, next time I come I want a proper go at that.”

The game sees two goalkeepers competing against each other on a small pitch. Each keeper must score past the other one in the opposite goal and they are able to use either their feet or hands to achieve this.

One goalie will have an attempt at scoring a goal before the other can take their shot straightaway. The goalkeeper who scores the most goals will win the game.

Played at a fast pace under the bright lights, Isaac Walker from Crown Legacy FC held his nerve as he sealed the victory. He came through a tight contest against Huntsville City FC goalkeeper Ben Martino in the first round, winning 4-3.

That earned him a place in the final against Austin FC II’s Damian Las, who booked his spot by defeating Houston Dynamo 2’s Xavier Valdez in round one. Leading 2-1 with seconds to go, Las scored a vital drop kick to level the scores and send the competition into overtime.

Each goalkeeper was given one attempt and after Las failed to convert, Walker rifled his trademark throw into the top corner to win the event. Describing how he felt during the game he said: “I was a little bit. I was hoping I could win in regulation, but took a deep breath, especially after he missed the first shot. I knew if I made that one, then I'd win it, and luckily I did.”

When discussing his throw-first approach to the game, the goalkeeper added: “I just felt like I was more accurate, especially with the distance. I just felt like throw was the best weapon for me to use.”

Coached by England legend Wayne Rooney, the MLS All-Stars will face Arsenal on July 20 at 1.30 am at Audi Field.
