Police have said there is no evidence of a lone toddler walking by the roadside reported by mum Carlee Russell before she mysteriously went missing for 49 hours.

Law enforcement in Alabama said Carlee disappeared from the side of the I-495 interstate after she made the 911 call near Hoover, Alabama 9.34pm on Thursday, July 13.

In a statement, Hoover Police said it is "not in a position to reveal all of the information we have gathered at this point," but confirmed no additional calls about a lone toddler were received.

The force said: "The Hoover Police Department has not located any evidence of a toddler walking down the interstate despite numerous vehicles passing through that area as depicted by the traffic camera surveillance video."

The mystery surrounding the nursing student continues after she suddenly turned up at the home she shares with her mum and dad on Saturday.

It was previously reported that Carlee "stopped to check on the child" after calling the cops and then called her brother's girlfriend.

While the pair were on the phone, the girlfriend heard Carlee scream before she stopped responding, leaving her brother's girlfriend just listening to the sounds of the passing highway.

Her car was found by the side of the road, with her belongings nearby. But just two days later, on Saturday, July 15, police received a call that Carlee had returned home.

Police in Harpersville, about 30 miles east of Hoover, said Carlee was "handling some business" in their town on the day of her disappearance. Police did not say what she was doing there but later clarified she "was not at the Harpersville Police Department."

Carlee's disappearance

The 49 hours in which she was reported to have disappeared sparked a frantic search for her whereabouts.

Her boyfriend, Thomar Latrell Simmons, believes his partner was kidnapped and that she was "literally fighting for her life."

Thomar said Carlee was not yet mentally ready to share what happened to her.

He said: "I just want to thank all of my family, friends, former teammates & church members who called or texted me just to let me know that they're praying & here for me; you guys don't know how much that meant to me!

"All I asked from everyone right now is to be respectful of Carlee's situation. She was literally fighting for her life for 48 hours, so until she’s physically & mentally stable again she is not able to give any updates or whereabouts on her kidnapper at this very moment.

"I also want to thank the people on social media who have been understanding & respectful about what she’s been through in these past few days. Once again I can’t thank you guys enough for helping us bring Carlee home! God bless you all."

When Carlee was first reported missing, Jefferson State said: "The entire Jefferson State community is extremely concerned for the safety of student Carlethia 'Carlee' Nichole Russell and are praying for her safe return as soon as possible."

Police have now said footage from the neighbourhood shows her "walking down the sidewalk alone."

Hoover Police said: "Detectives have obtained surveillance video from Carlee's neighbourhood which showed her walking down the sidewalk alone prior to her arrival at her residence. Fire department radio traffic obtained by several media outlets shows that medics were dispatched to her residence on an "unresponsive but breathing" person.

"That was the term used in the initial dispatch of the Hoover Fire Department to the residence and the information about her condition was simply a dispatcher relaying information from what a 911 caller told the emergency communicator.

"When first responders arrived on scene, they found Ms Russell conscious and speaking and she was transported in that condition. She was later treated and released from a local hospital."
