For drinkers with a sweet tooth, spiced rum is one of the most popular spirits with it being made from sugar cane. Making an appearance in many classic cocktails and pairing with a variety of mixers, it's a great option.

Here at the Mirror we've taken it upon ourselves to find the best available on the market, taking into consideration the flavour notes, alcohol level and even the stylish bottles to decide which are must-haves in any home bar. Whether you prefer a traditional Caribbean option or would rather something a little closer to home we've got it all.

Here is what we consider to be the best spiced rums on the market, coming from our rum expert Jada Jones:

1. Kraken Black Spiced Rum

Kraken Black Spiced Rum

Hailing from Trinidad & Tobago this rum has managed to make itself something of a legend, the bottle stands out in any collection and it can be found on most shelves when shopping for booze.

With an opening aroma of toffee, allspice and clove followed by notes of vanilla, ginger and peppercorns it's clear why this bottle is the favourite of so many. Here at the Mirror we think it's one of the very best on the market.

It works well mixed with cola or even on the rocks but there are a number of cocktails you can make at home if you're feeling adventurous, my personal favourites would have to be the Sea Monster Mai Tai or the Kramble.

2. Cut to the Spice

Made up of a blend of Jamaican and Trinidadian rums, at 37.5% ABV Cut to the Spice is not overly strong compared to some options on the market.

It smells somewhat of pancake batter and toasted orange, with the creamy flavours of vanilla, caramel and sea salt coming through. While this particular bottle isn't available in most supermarkets it makes an amazing gift to any rum fans in your life.

This pairs well with ginger ale or cola but can be transformed into a 'Sugar Mama' cocktail with the addition of pineapple and lime juice, almond syrup and a dash of Campari.

3. Depth Charge

Depth Charge

With a nose of rich honey, brown sugar, old fashioned cola and a touch of citrus, this rum is warm. It opens out into a cinnamon and lime flavour with touches of peppercorn and cola cubes before finishing of with caramel, vanilla and a splash of citrus.

For an English rum it really stands out and pairs well with any classic rum mixers, it's being compared to Kraken but stands on its own merit.

4. Rumbullion!

Rumbullion!

Ableforth's Rumbullion! is a Guyanese rum that comes wrapped in brown paper, wound with twine and then sealed with black wax for a truly distinctive look.

The rum holds a number of awards and rightly so, it has a distinct nose of vanilla, orange zest and cardamom which is evocative of traditional cola. Orange remains a solid note throughout although the palate includes candy floss, toffee apples and crème brûlée. Rounded out with vanilla and cinnamon this bottle has everything you want in a spiced rum.

It's recommended to drink this rum neat or with ice and squeeze of fresh lime.

5. One Eyed Rebel

One Eyed Rebel

This rum is actually distilled in Manchester, which is a little unorthodox for this type of boozex. Despite its unusual home town it still makes our list. It takes its spiciness quite seriously with it having notes of cinnamon, black pepper and fiery ginger but it's quickly mellowed out with a finishing note of creamy vanilla.

We like it best with pineapple juice but it's great with classic mixers or transformed into a Treacle cocktail.

6. Hawksbill

Hawksbill (Hawksbill)

Hawksbill rum has racked up a number of awards, but not only that the brand donates 10% of profits from each bottle to the Barbados Sea Turtle Project. Rums from Guyana and Trinidad were blended together to create a delicious addition to any collection.

There's opening notes of vanilla combined with toasted nutmeg, cinnamon and raisin which settles out into hints of salt and cardamom, making it not overly sweet for a spiced rum. It's a versatile rum that pairs well with anything but we like it as the famous New Orleans Hurricane.

7. Sailor Jerry

Sailor Jerry

This is a staple amongst bartenders and for good reason. Manufactured and bottled in Scotland, it features notes of vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg and fits right in with classic spiced rums. It also features a touch of toasted toffee and a splash of ginger.

It's great with standard cola, as it is often served up in bars but it can make for delicious cocktails such as the slightly tangy Blue Hawaii or the sweet Chica-Cherry Jerry.

8. Captain Morgan Original Spiced Gold

Captain Morgan Original Spiced Gold

Hailing from the United States Virgin Islands, Captain Morgan Original Golden Spiced rum has been around since 1982 and is a firmly established favourite. It has notes of vanilla, brown sugar, dried fruit and oak with a smooth finish.

Most often served up with cola and a dash of lime as a Captain & Cola, we're also quite partial to the Spiced Runner which is a fruity blend of juices and a splash of grenadine.

9. Chairman's Reserve

Chairman's Reserve (Chairman's Reserve)

This Saint Lucian rum is praised for having orange notes and a touch of chocolate, reminiscent of Jaffa cakes, Jamaican ginger cake and cinnamon biscuits it's no surprise that it's a hit with rum drinkers. Flavours of vanilla, allspice and clove round out the tropical flavour.

We like it best over ice or mixed with cola, but it goes perfectly in a Cable Car cocktail.
