Many of Ariana Grande's lyrics are heartbreakingly sad, and if the rumours of a divorce between her and her husband Dalton Gomez are true, we might receive more heartbreaking lyrics from the songstress in an upcoming album.

Ariana attended Wimbledon this week without her ring, sparking the rumours of trouble in paradise. Ariana began dating Dalton in 2020, and they got married in 2021.

Her previous relationships have been in the news for years. The singer dated rapper, Mac Miller, from 2016 to 2018. After their break up, she started dating Pete Davidson and got engaged within a month. The two called off their relationship in October 2018.

We take a look at the saddest heartbreak songs by Ariana and the stories behind them.

Ghostin

Supposedly, Ariana did not want to release this song, claiming it as too personal, but Scooter Braun, her manager allegedly pushed her to.

"I know you hear me when I cry/I try to hold it in at night/while you're sleeping next to me," the song starts.

It's alleged that the song is written for Pete while he and Ariana were dating. The lyric "though I wish he were here instead, don't want that living in your head," suggests that Ariana is missing her ex, Mac Miller, while being with Pete.

During her relationship with Pete, in 2018, Mac died of an accidental drug overdose after struggling with addiction for years. His death deeply affected Ariana, as she has said in her remembrance post: "I'm so sad I don't know what to do. You were my dearest friend. For so long."

Thank u, next

This song is an upbeat self-love anthem, but there is heartbreak hiding between the lines.

Ariana mentions her failed engagement with Pete Davidson with the lyrics "even almost got married/and for Pete I'm so thankful."

In a viral video, Ariana performs the song in concert in Philadelphia, Mac Miller's hometown. Her voice breaks as she sings: "Wish I could say 'Thank you' to Malcolm/'cause he was an angel."

It's obvious Ariana was doing her best to move on but her heartbreaks stayed with her.

Just a Little Bit of Your Heart

Though Ariana didn't write this song, it was penned for her by Harry Styles, it's still a heartbreaking tale of someone who can't let go of a cheating partner. "The first time I heard it, I was so, like, touched and moved, it was beautiful," Ariana said about the song. The song became the tenth track on her My Everything album.

With a bridge stating: "I know I'm not your only, but at least I'm one/I heard a little love is better than none," the piano ballad is guaranteed to pull at anyone's heartstrings.

In My Head

The song off her thank u next album starts off with a voice note from Ariana's friend Doug Middlebrook. He tells her that "enough is enough" when it comes to her relationship, though it's unclear which relationship he's talking about.

Ariana sings of how the person she's in a relationship with isn't the person she thought he was. She fell in love with someone her imagination created, and the song deals with her struggle of realizing her partner isn't who she wanted him to be.

"Painted a picture, I thought I drew you well," Ariana sings, later saying, "thought you were someone else."
