Eddie Pepperell once again amused golf fans on Twitter, after offering a hilarious response to a video of Rory McIlroy angrily smashing his driver at the Genesis Invitational.

McIlroy was competing at Riviera in the hopes of regaining his world No. 1 spot. However it was not to be for the Northern Irishman, who could only finish the tournament tied in 29th after carding four-under-par across the week.

The four-time major champion has enjoyed an impressive run of form in recent months, but failed to replicate it last weekend as he finished a mammoth 13 shots behind eventual champion and world No. 1 Jon Rahm.

During his outing on the iconic California course, McIlroy's frustations ever so slightly boiled over after he crashed his driver into the ground after appearing to hit a wayward tee shot. The reaction drew mixed reactions from golf fans on social media.

As a result, some were quick to criticise the outburst, slamming the etiquette of the world No. 3. Pepperell however was quick to see the funny side, and offered a quick-witted response to McIlroy's antics.

After sharing the clip online - which has since been viewed 1.2 million times - golf YouTuber Mark Crossfield questioned McIlroy's etiquette, asking: "Is this OK?" Amongst the fans, DP World Tour star Pepperell was quick to replied.

Joking that the problem is McIlroy's club choice rather than his outburst, he tweeted: "No. It's a 3-wood all day long on that hole." McIlroy signed for a level-par 71 following his final 18 holes at Riviera in Sunday's fourth round.

Following his recent high standards McIlroy was no doubt left disappointed with his top 30 finish, and criticised his own performance, especially with the putter. "Sort of slow and pedestrian," McIlroy said of his play whilst competing in California.

He went on: "I played really well, tee to green, I feel like I'm right there. I feel like I've left a lot of shots out there the last couple of days; I just haven't got any putts to drop."

Having started the new year on top of the rankings, McIlroy has slipped to No. 3 in the world following victories for his top three rivals Scottie Scheffler and Rahm in recent weeks.
