Prince George didn't know he was second-in-line to the British throne until very recently, according to a royal insider.

The future King, who celebrates his 10th birthday on July 22, is said to have been kept in the dark about being a royal for most of his life.

A friend of his family revealed how he would refer to his great-grandma, the late Queen, as 'Gan-Gan', as opposed to her official title.

During events such as Trooping the Colour, he would be told that everyone was clapping for her on Buckingham Palace's balcony because she was very popular and well-loved.

His parents, Prince William and Kate, apparently wanted to protect their children as much as possible from all the complexities that come with being a royal.

A royal source told Fabulous: "[They told him] anything ‘royal’, like the picture of the then-monarch and her three heirs in Buckingham Palace, was done for her.

"They did not tell him until relatively recently that he will, one day, be King. It was a delicate balance to protect his childhood and innocence.

"But also it meant explaining to him that his grandfather and father will die one day, which is a very tough concept for any child to grasp. It’s also very tricky for what it means for his siblings, Charlotte and Louis."

The comments come as George breaks up from Lambrook School in Berkshire along with sister Charlotte, aged eight, and five-year-old brother Louis.

The royal siblings started their summer holidays with a day out at an airshow, touring the Royal International Air Tattoo privately with their parents.

Torrential downpours dogged their day at the popular visitor attraction, with William looking after the children when Kate met Air Cadets in her role as Honorary Air Commandant of the Air Cadets.

But the young royals enjoyed the experience of being taken round aircraft by Wing Commander Will Essex, with Louis spotted clambering onto a quad bike in the hold and heard speaking on the aircraft's PA system.

Wg Cdr Essex, commanding officer of 99 Squadron which operates the C-17 planes, said: "With the prince and princess we were chatting about our roles and with the children we were just showing them around.

"They sat on a little quadbike we had down the back and then they got in the cockpit and sat in the pilots' seats and flicked some switches."

The event was a return visit for George who was taken to the show by his parents in 2016, aged three, and was pictured wearing ear defenders at the time.

With the rain lashing down, the royal children were dressed for a summer day in light casual clothing and George and Charlotte looked around at the rain-soaked concrete around the huge plane when they stepped from their car at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.

The huge C-17 transporter aircraft was used to carry the late Queen's coffin from Edinburgh to London in the days ahead of her funeral last September with Wg Cdr Essex in charge of the operation.

George was given the task of partially raising the plane's ramp and could be seen pressing the button as his father watched before the royals were given a private tour.

When it was lowered around 10 minutes later Louis was seen jumping onto the quad bike and was later heard saying "hello" over the PA system.
