"Should anyone present know of any reason that this couple should not be joined in holy matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace." Are there any more terrifying words to hear during a wedding?

Granted, if a couple has gathered their nearest and dearest for the special occasion, you'd hope everyone wants the marriage to go ahead. But it's not unheard of for a guest to speak up in an effort to prevent the union.

On rare occasions, a playful guest might also pretend to object, though it's often ill-advised. One mortified wedding guest learned this lesson the hard way after making a joke during the pivotal moment - and upsetting the couple.

As a friend of the groom, the troublemaker did not mean to cause any offence. As he explained in a post to Reddit, he was sharing an inside joke that he didn't mean for anyone else to hear when the problem arose.

"Recently I attended my best friend's wedding. We met as we used to play Mortal Kombat and street fighters together online and found out we lived in the same state. He had an obsession with Mileena, and I always teased him that he would rather get with her instead of his long-time girlfriend – now wife," he wrote.

"During the wedding ceremony, when the priest announced whether there were any objections, I turned to another friend who we both played with online and joked that the groom would still have time for Mileena. Unfortunately, the bride's mother overheard [and] started shouting asking who Mileena was and that the groom must have been cheating this whole time. She always has disliked him."

But the nightmare did not stop there. "Naturally I was mortified, and the groom was as well, especially when it seemed like the priest would stop the wedding. This led to the most embarrassing moment in my life, where I had to go up there and explain to the priest using my phone what I had joked about, and how she was a fictional character," the guest continued.

Now, he is dealing with consequences. "My best friend isn't talking to me, and his wife hates me." But he does not accept full responsibility for what happened.

"I did explain to the priest what was going on in order to make sure the wedding could go ahead and some part of me believes that if the bride’s mother didn't eavesdrop, we wouldn't have even had a problem in the first place," he wrote in a post to Reddit, which concluded: "Am I the a****e?"

Unfortunately for him, commenters struggled to sympathise with his plight. One person chastised the guest, writing: "Dude you made your in joke at the most inappropriate time and place. You could have saved it for when none of the other guests would hear it but instead you did this during the middle of your friend's wedding. Not cool." Another added: "Have a bit of respect for their wedding, time and place."

However, someone else thought: "It was an innocent joke. His mother-in-law is the one who ruined the wedding by shouting. "Who starts shouting like that during a wedding? She could have easily waited until after the wedding to clear it up and it would likely have been clear that it was just a joke to everyone else."
