Gerrard's huge salary emerges as he becomes fourth highest-paid boss in world

Liverpool hero Steven Gerrard pockets an eye-watering £15.2m a year over in Saudi Arabia as Al-Ettifaq’s new manager.

The iconic former midfielder made the switch to the Gulf state earlier this year despite previously confirming that a deal had fallen through. Gerrard has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with Al-Ettifaq as he returns to management following spells with Rangers and Aston Villa.

He is just the latest in a long line of managers and players to make the move over to Saudi Arabia this summer. It is not hard to see why Gerrard has made the decision to move given how much he pockets.

According to The Sun, the former Liverpool star earns £15.2m each year of his deal. That works out at around £1.26m per month, whilst Gerrard is paid around £300k per week with a pay packet that sees him become the fourth-highest-paid manager in world football.

Atletico Madrid schemer Diego Simeone sits at the top of the list with a £30m pay packet. Meanwhile, Premier League duo Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp round off the top three, as they are paid £20m and £16m by Manchester City and Liverpool respectively.

Giving the reasons as to why he decided to move to Saudi Arabia, Gerrard said: "When I went to Saudi I got a real family feeling. It made me actually feel welcomed.

"There are three things I always consider in order -- it needs to be right for my family first and foremost. We have to be excited and motivated by the challenge.

"Secondly I think the football project needs to be ambitious, it needs to be for the right reasons, and then of course you need to feel secure with the contract, but this comes at the very end."

Gerrard, 43, will be aiming to improve his new side’s fortunes next season. Al-Ettifaq finished seventh in the Saudi Pro League last term having not won the title since 1987.

He has already overseen his first session as manager ahead of a pre-season friendly against Croatian side NK Varazdin set to take place on Saturday. Gerrard will be hoping that he can add what would be a marquee signing to his squad before the season gets underway.

Al-Ettifaq are chasing current Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and have reportedly offered him a contract worth around £700k per week. The midfielder is considering a move to the Gulf state but has still been named in Liverpool’s squad for their pre-season trip to Germany.

It is reported that the Saudi side have not yet lodged a formal offer to Liverpool. Should Henderson agree to a move, then he would bring to an end a hugely successful 12-year spell for the midfielder on Merseyside.
