How do you tell identical twins apart? Normally, you can depend on their difference characterises or gestures, even if you struggle to notice their physical differences. Failing that, you can always rely on their names.

Of course, it's important to get to know any twins in your life for who they are individually, but their different names can prove useful during first introductions. Or at least, they normally help. One substitute teacher will have likely had to make an extra effort to differentiate identical twins in their class after they learned the sisters share similar names. Taken aback, the teacher took to the internet.

For many twins, sharing related monikers may be a beautiful sign of their close relationship. Unfortunately, the teacher appeared to disagree, as they slammed the 'ridiculous' choice on Reddit. In the post, the educator revealed they teach twins named Selene and Selina, before asking: "Anyone else ever come across an equally ridiculous sib set?"

However, the comments suggested it is quite common for parents to give twins similar-sounding names.

One reply read: "My husband went to school with twins named Chris & Christopher." A second said: "My dad knows twins his age named Rick/Ricky and Richard." And someone else revealed: "I went to school with identical twins named Kelly and Kellen."

While it was not clear if all responders liked the names they shared, several did debate the merits of similar monikers.

"I know twins with the same name same spelling, no joke. Both Leonardo. She loved the name and had it picked out and had SURPRISE twins… just rolled with the same name still. Different middle names and mercifully the second at least goes by the middle name but what. Logistical nightmare. She is the loveliest and best neighbor but that part about her (grown) twin boys is a head scratcher for sure lol," someone wrote.

Another said: "As a twin mom, names like these make my teeth itch."

"As a twin mom, I’m right there with you…" a parent agreed.
