Brits have been warned to expect heavy rain as thunderstorms lash parts of the nation today.

After a warm weekend parts of the UK have now been hit with a yellow weather warning for rain from the Met Office.

The warning comes after showers and storms swept much of the country at the weekend, pushing northwards across the UK despite earlier predictions that temperatures could reach as high as 33C in some places.

Wimbledon and the Ashes Test match at Headingley in Leeds were both disrupted by the weather. The Met Office are now warning that parts of the north could see a deluge and a warning is in force until 6am today.

Forecasters said those in the affected area should expect 'spray and flooding' that could lead to 'difficult driving conditions and some road closures.'

There is also the chance of delays and cancellations and that flooding could cut off some communities.

The Met Office has also warned of a risk of power cuts and flooding causing damage to buildings.

Forecasters said: "Areas of rain will move northwards across Scotland late Monday afternoon and continue during the evening and overnight into Tuesday.

"This is likely to bring fairly widely 15-25 mm of rainfall, which in itself is unlikely to bring disruption, other than areas of standing water. However, there is a small chance of the rain turning heavier leading to areas of 30-50 mm and perhaps even 70 mm for one or two spots. If this did occur this is more likely to lead to some surface water flooding."

Elsewhere on Tuesday there will be sunnier spells during the day away from the north and temperatures are set to be average for the time of year.

UK weather forecast

Today:

Rain clearing from the southeast during the morning. Elsewhere it's a day of sunny spells and showers, these most frequent in the north, perhaps with thunder and hail. Near average temperatures, with highs of 24 Celsius in eastern England.

Tonight:

Showers quickly fading during the evening, leaving most places dry with clear spells, however some showers will linger across the north and west. Feeling a little fresher than Monday night.

Wednesday:

After a dry and fine start, showers, locally heavy and thundery will soon develop, these pushing eastwards in organised bands during the day. Some sunny spells making it feel warm.
