A "bittersweet" birthday party was held for a two-year-old girl whose pregnant mum tragically died in a shooting just two days ago while holding her in her arms.

Sky Moore was in the arms of her mum, Justina Wallace, when 21-year-old Aaniyah Nowden allegedly fired a fatal gunshot on Friday during a dispute.

According to police, both women had children fathered by the same man.

Justina, who was pregnant when she died, was just feet away from her sons who witnessed the tragic shooting unfold, according to officers.

Friends and family gathered on Sunday to celebrate Sky's birthday with pictures showing balloons, presents, juice and pictures of her mum.

The party was almost cancelled due to the events on Friday but Justina's friends believe it's what she would have wanted for Sky.

Angel Weatherspoon, who helped put together the party, admitted the gathering was "bittersweet."

Meanwhile, another friend said the party was about trying to keep the spirits of the children up.

Charkelia Parker told AL.com: “Justina did everything big and we’re just trying to keep that going.

"We’re trying to keep them uplifted. It’s basically about the kids right now."

Police said the shooting, in Birmingham, Alabama, US, happened just before 7pm on Friday when the mum was rushed to a local hospital, but was pronounced dead the following day.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald revealed an early investigation has shown Justina was in an argument with 21-year-old Aaniyah Nowden.

Images posted to social media showed the suspect allegedly pointing a gun at pregnant Justina, who was seen holding Sky in her arms.

Birmingham police confirmed a capital murder charge against Nowden after Justina was killed in the presence of her kids.

The suspect was taken into custody on Friday and held in Birmingham City jail until a formal warrant was obtained on Sunday.

She was then booked into Jefferson County Jail without bond on Sunday at 5.41pm - just 20 minutes before Sky's birthday party started.

Glamorus Mullen, a close friend of Justina who is now taking care of her children, "has yet to wrap her head around" the shooting.

She said: “It’s just mind-blowing. Everything happened so fast. I have yet to wrap my head around anything. It definitely doesn’t feel right.”

The pair met two years ago and quickly became friends as Glamorus likened her to her own sister.

She said: “I just gravitated to her. She was a sweet girl. She was like my own sister.”

James Lockhart, who was also close to the mum, said the mum was "loved" and "outgoing. "

“She was outgoing. She was loud,’’ he said. “She was a good mother. She went above and beyond for her kids.

“She was loved,’’ Lockhart said. “I hate this happened.”
