A 19-year-old rookie police officer lost her life and two others were injured after a burglary suspect being pursued crashed into their patrol car.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when Officer Jessica Ebbighausen, a newly appointed member of the Rutland police force, was involved in a fatal collision.

According to Vermont State Police, Jessica and her fellow officers were engaged in a high-speed chase of a truck driven by 20-year-old Tate Rheaume.

The suspect had allegedly attempted to break into a residence, prompting police to rush to the scene.

Rheaume's vehicle crossed the centre of the road, resulting in a head-on collision with Jessica's cruiser. The truck then collided with another police vehicle before coming to a stop.

Tragically, Officer Jessica Ebbighausen died from her injuries at the scene. The 19-year-old had only joined the Rutland police force as a part-time officer two months prior and was scheduled to commence full-time training at the Vermont Police Academy in August.

Rutland City Police Chief Brian Kilcullen expressed his grief over the loss, stating, "She always had a smile on her face. We were looking forward to having her as part of our family."

Since the age of nine, Jessica had aspired to become a police officer and was the granddaughter of former Police Commission Chairman Robert Ebbighausen.

Outside the Rutland City Police Department, an outpouring of support was evident as flowers and messages accumulated in memory of the young officer.

The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Vermont State Police, who are examining speed and substance abuse as potential contributing factors.

Governor Phil Scott of Vermont expressed his deep sadness at the loss of Officer Jessica Ebbighausen. He said: "This is a reminder of the risks our officers face every day, and my thoughts are with all of them tonight.

"My deepest condolences go out to her family and friends, all members of the Rutland City Police Department and the entire Rutland community. "

The two injured officers were transported to a local hospital with injuries that were deemed to be non-life-threatening. Their identities have not been disclosed.

Tate Rheaume, the burglary suspect responsible for the crash, also sustained injuries and is currently in custody at the UVM Medical Center.

Multiple charges, including grossly negligent operation of a motor vehicle with death resulting and attempting to elude with death resulting, have been filed against him by the Rutland County State Attorney's office. Rheaume is expected to appear before a judge on Monday.
