Neighbour's horror as police officer repeatedly shoots dead golden retriever

Horrifying video footage revealed the moment a cop shot dead a family's beloved golden retriever in Ohio.

The family can be heard crying out as Lorain Police Officer Elliott Palmer shot dead Dixie, a three-and-a-half-year-old pooch.

Officer Palmer was responding to a call of five dogs running loose. According to the footage, Dixie did not appear aggressive but was approaching the officer, who discharged his weapon.

Footage from neighbours led to an outcry and Lorain Police released the footage earlier this week. A "Justice for Dixie" event was held outside Lorain Police headquarters.

A number of people in the community including Dixie's owner are calling for Palmer to be fired.

Dixie can be seen dragging her hind legs as she attempted to get back to the grass after being shot in the middle of the street. She collapsed after making it back to a neighbour's driveway.

Several people angrily confronted the officer, wasting to know what happened to Dixie.

Owner Tammie Kerns told 3News: "After she was shot one time in the street, he should have just let it go and let us get the dog and take her where she needed to be treated.

"But he didn't do that. She was crawling — useless, helpless — in the street. He continued shooting her. She was trying to come to safety, and he just kept shooting her three more times after the first time."

Tammie was heard calling Palmer a "stupid f**k" on the bodycam footage.

"You killed my dog," she can be heard shouting, as Palmer responds by saying "Your dog charged."

Kerns' daughter added: "I thought hey this man's gonna help us stop traffic so if any of our dogs do happen to run in the street, he was gonna stop it that's what most cops do."

Dixie was shot as Kerns and her daughter attempted to round up the excited dogs, startled by fireworks on July 2, ahead of July 4 celebrations.

Palmer has been placed on leave as Lorain Police conduct an investigation.

A statement from the force said: "Chief McCann is also working with several outside expert consultants who will be assisting ad reviewing the facts of this case."

A furious Kerns said Palmer "should lose his job."

Kerns added: "He should go to jail. He should rot. I don't want him to shoot somebody else. He needs to be off the streets. There were innocent bystanders nearby."

An officer's report filed by Palmer, who called for backup after the shooting, said: "Due to the totality of the circumstances, I feared for my immediate safety. As the dog charged me, I drew my service pistol.

"At this point the dog was no more than a few feet away from me. I then discharged my service pistol several times at the dog to stop the threat. The dog then ran toward the front of my cruiser, and passed due to its injuries."

Lorain Police Lieutenant Jacob Morris said: "Regardless of the situation, they’re dealing with the loss of a family member.

"It hurts to even say that we were involved in that, but with that being said, we can offer our condolence.

WKYC reported Kerns is planning on filing a lawsuit against Lorain Police.
