Mason Mount is finalising his £55million transfer from Chelsea to Manchester United after completing a medical.

The England international, 24, has agreed a five-year deal with United, who've won the race for his signature following interest from rivals Liverpool and Arsenal. Mount spent 18 years with Chelsea but with one season left on his contract, the Blues decided to sell him in order to recoup a fee.

On Tuesday morning, the midfielder was seen holding a red shirt at a Cheshire hotel before heading for the Red Devils' training base, Carrington. Mount first arrived on Monday to undergo a medical and meet his new team-mates, who returned for testing ahead of pre-season.

It's expected that United will announce the signing of Mount before the end of this week, with his debut potentially coming in next Wednesday's friendly against Leeds in Oslo, Norway. Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is relishing the chance to work with the Chelsea academy graduate, who he first saw while pl

aying for Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands six years ago.

Mount has since gone on to win the Champions League and represent England at two major tournaments, emerging as a favourite of various managers such as Thomas Tuchel, Gareth Southgate and Frank Lampard. Old Trafford is where he's next hoping to shine following a below-par season with Chelsea in which injury ravaged his 2022-23 campaign.

Mount has already been backed to succeed by former United defender Rio Ferdinand, who declared on his FIVE YouTube show: "I think Mason Mount is a very good signing. He'll be a valuable member of the squad. He's a good player, a top player, I love the way he plays football.

"Every manager he has had - as a guide - has been nothing but positive about him, has loved having him, has been integral to everything that they've done. He had injuries last season so he tailed off a little bit in terms of numbers but the two seasons he did well at Chelsea they won the Champions League in one of them.

"Goals, assists, chances created, runs from deep into the box, always a goal threat, impacts games, decisive player, has to play. When he gets back to that... Last season I'd write off - more injuries than anything, loss of confidence maybe - but if you get the Mason Mount over them couple of years at Chelsea, you get that in a red shirt, delightful."

Ferdinand's ex-team-mate, Gary Neville, is "surprised" at the move, though, as he told the Metro: "Mount would be a very good addition to United's squad, but it is a lot of money for a squad addition. Does Mount, Casemiro and [Bruno] Fernandes work as a midfield three?

"Spending £60m, you have got to get that jump towards winning the league from third place. United, at this moment in time, they haven't got the money and they haven't got the promise of the new ownership to be able to throw the big money at players."
