Shoppers did a double take when they spotted a horse between the aisles of their local supermarket.

The pony was seen perusing the shelves of a Tesco superstore in Cardiff, much to the astonishment of fellow customers.

But those left blinking in disbelief were quick to realise their eyes weren't foal-ing them, with shoppers snapping pictures of creature as it trotted past the F+F clothing section.

The black and white pony trotted around the store in the Pengham Green area for several minutes before staff eventually were able to usher it out, Wales Online reports.

The farmyard animal bypassed the carrots to check out the baby food section, and was snapped by bemused bystanders having a nosey at the rusks instead.

Word on whether the equine customer had a Clubcard remains unconfirmed.

A local animal charity called The Healthy Horse Project, who just happened to be in the building buying their groceries at the same time, also grabbed shots of the pony before sharing online.

Many wondered where the curious creature had come from, and how it managed to wander undetected into the superstore in the first place.

One local explained there were nearby fields behind the Tesco store, suggesting it had broken free from there and decided to go for a leisurely shopping trip.

"How did it make it that far into the shop, LOL," one person wrote. "Needed some shower gel by the looks of it."

"Obviously heading for the cough medicines as it was feeling a little horse," posted someone else.
