It's most people's dream to be able to head to work with a packed lunch that's been lovingly made by someone close to them with all their favourite foods in it.

From sandwiches to fruit and crisps, a top-quality lunch should be a delightful mix of everything you love, and when one woman innocently shared a picture of her husband's packed lunch online, she wasn't expecting the barrage of criticism that she received.

The unnamed woman uploaded the image to the Facebook group, Budget Friendly Meals Australia where the post quickly gained a lot of attention - not all of it positive.

Her image showed she'd made sandwiches for her partner, put some crackers in a tub, cut up some cheese and sausages in another, and also got out a muesli bar and some fruit for him, including an apple, banana, and orange - a delicious lunch by many people's standards.

The wife wrote alongside the photo that the lunch was "cheaper, fresher and healthier" than the options typically available on a construction site, where her husband works.

But it wasn't the lunch itself that caused a commotion - it was the fact that she'd prepared it for him in the first place that got people's backs up.

Facebook users began arguing about gender roles in this day and age, with many saying he should be making his own lunch.

Others thought the woman was treating the grown man like a child and berated her for "waiting on him hand and foot".

"Do we have to feed them during the day now too?", someone griped.

But others defended the woman's choice to make her husband's packed lunch, writing: "Each to their own, nobody is forcing you to pack husband's lunch. Move on if you don't agree with it."

And another woman admitted to writing affectionate messages on the lid of her husband's lunch box every day to make him smile.
