If you have trainers that have become dirty over time, cleaning them can feel like a bit of a chore. So when a hack emerged online claiming you could stick your shoes in the dishwasher to clean them without needing to do any of the hard work yourself, many people jumped at the chance to try it out.

But according to Queen of Clean Lynsey Crombie, you actually shouldn't be trying this hack yourself, as it could completely ruin your trainers and leave them in tatters.

During an episode of This Morning earlier this week, Holly Willoughby said she had seen the hack on social media, and said it involved someone putting their dirty white trainers into the dishwasher before getting them out when they were sparkling clean and looking like new.

But Lynsey said she decided to put the hack to the test using a pair of her own trainers that had become dirty from her time spent walking her dog - and found that the results were catastrophic.

She said: "I had to try it, and do you know what? One of my trainers had a little bit of duck poo on it from walking the dog and I thought, 'those are the ones to put in, lets give this a go'. Do you want to see the result? I don't recommend this."

Video footage was then shown of Lynsey putting her shoes in the dishwasher, before it cut back to the studio where the Queen of Clean was showing off her destroyed trainers.

She added: "Split there, the inside has all come out, and the pink [on the back] dyed the laces as well."

Explaining what she believed happened to her shoes, Lynsey said that because the dishwasher is so hot - with the minimum temperature on her appliance being 45 degrees - it creates hot steam which then melts the glue that holds the fabric of the trainers together.

And the cleaning guru was also left with bits of fabric scattered all over the bottom of her dishwasher, meaning she had to give the appliance "a really good clean" after her experiment was finished.

It's not all bad news though, as Lynsey revealed there are some clothes that you can put in your dishwasher such as baseball caps, which she wouldn't recommend for the washing machine as it could break the peak.

She said: "Now I wouldn't put this in your washing machine because running around it's going to break the peak, but I've done this a couple of times on my social media and this does work."
