The Mirror’s campaign to install defibrillators in public places was praised by ministers as they announced £1million to pay for 1,000 of the lifesaving devices.

Community organisations will be able to bid for funding for an Automated External Defibrillator.

Successful applicants can choose to match the funding, meaning up to 2,000 AEDs could be supplied.

Health Minister Helen Whately said: “The Daily Mirror has made incredible efforts campaigning to get defibrillators installed in schools, sports clubs, designated shops and other public buildings.

“Without immediate treatment, an unexpected cardiac arrest is nearly always fatal.

“I am inviting organisations across England to register their interest in bidding for £1m of funding to buy lifesaving defibrillators for community spaces.”

Our campaign previously led to min-isters announcing that all secondary schools in England will have access to at least two AEDs.

AEDs give the heart an electric shock to restore a stable rhythm during cardiac arrest. Clear instructions mean anyone can use them.

NHS England called the fund a “great opportunity” for communities.
