A passenger is said to have stabbed himself to death in front of horrified commuters at a central London tube station.

Witnesses reported people running from Sloane Square in a panic, with one woman shouting "run run, run".

A huge police presence was seen outside the underground station following the horror incident earlier this morning.

British Transport Police has confirmed reports of a man sustaining 'serious, self inflicted injuries' and that he died at the scene.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police told The Mirror: "Officers were called to Sloane Square Underground station at 10.26am on 28 June following reports that a man had sustained serious, self-inflicted injuries.

"Paramedics also attended however despite their best efforts the man has been pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

An image from the scene shows a man on the floor on the platform with a knife discarded on the ground, with two commuters looking on in horror.

It was reported that police formed a human shield to block the harrowing scene from the view of passing trains.

One person said on social media: "People have been running out in a panic of Sloane Square station.

"A lady has screamed "RUN! RUN! RUN!". My partner got anxious and sought refuge at the nearby shops.

Josh Rendall, a councillor for the area, said: "An awfully tragic morning at Sloane Square.

"Thanks to the police, paramedics and TfL staff for all they do. Thoughts with the family of the man and those who may have witnessed the event."

The station reopened around 45 minutes after the horror scene.

Tory chairman Greg Hands added: "Terrible news at Sloane Square station.
