A passenger riding a tram in Nottingham has been stabbed to death as police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

One eyewitness at the shocking incident at Highbury Vale tram stop in Basford, Nottingham, was left terrified at the "blood bath" in the carriage.

Officers have now launched a murder investigation after the shocking incident on board a tram approaching Highbury Vale today. A man in his 30s was stabbed and tragically died.

Officers were alerted to the incident around 11.10am and arrived within minutes. However, despite the best efforts of emergency services they couldn’t save the man but arrested one man on suspicion of murder.

He remains in police custody and a cordon remains in place while investigations continue.

One witness recalled the horrific aftermath of the stabbing, describing it as a "bloodbath".

The woman said: "I saw another older lady coming off the tram and she looked really shocked. I helped her across the road. We passed a police van and there was a person sitting in the van with blood on his hands. He was shaking and looked in a bad way."

Chief Constable Kate Meynell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “What happened at Highbury Vale this morning is tragic and has resulted in the death of a man in his 30s.

“We know there were other passengers on board at the time and understand how frightening this must have been for anyone who saw what happened.

“Our officers were at the scene quickly and detained a suspect. He remains in police custody.

“This was an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with what happened this morning.”
