Plane food can leave a lot to be desired, despite airlines making efforts to improve in-flight meals, even if that means having to over-salt dishes.

If you've booked a ticket that includes food, you'll often be given a choice of dishes; usually chicken, fish or veggie options. However a flight attendant has warned that there's one 'gross' dish you should try and swerve.

The member of cabin crew previously opened up a Reddit thread, encouraging passengers to 'ask me anything' about their career as an airline worker.

Unsurprisingly, some questions arose about the plane food - particularly whether you should opt for the chicken or fish.

According to them, there's only one right answer: "Chicken. Airplane fish is gross."

It wasn't their only tip when it comes to in-flight meals.

They added they would't recommend people order tea or coffee, because these are served with water that 'comes from the portable water tanks' and that 'cleaning them is hard'.

Of course sometimes your choice of meal is out of your hands, if some of the best food has already been picked and you're left with the last few dishes.

However, an airline worker previously revealed the best seats to book in economy for maximum comfort and top pick of the food and drink.

Kamila Jakubjakova, a flight attendant for over three years, said that if you pre-book your seat, try and find one that's as close to the front of the cabin as possible.

Not only is turbulence felt less than at the tail, but you’ll feel the benefit when it comes to mealtimes.

She told eShores: "The food service usually starts from the front of the airplane, so you'll get to dine first if you sit in the very first rows of an aircraft. Sitting in the front rows also means you're more likely to get your preferred choice of meal if two meal options are available."

As for your drinks? You may want to buy a bottle of water at the airport before heading to your gate.

“Bottled water would be my first choice as the water tanks don't get cleaned often due to time constraints," she explained.

"That being said, over my flying career I drank countless cups of tea and coffee when I needed a caffeine boost to stay up on night flights, and I never had any issues.

"Although the aircraft water is definitely not the best quality, they have to follow the hygiene and sanitation standards."
