Police searching for a young woman have confirmed a body has been found in a North Yorkshire river.

Sophie Lambert, 22, was last seen leaving her home in Harrogate last Friday at around 7pm.

North Yorkshire Police issued CCTV images of the missing woman, wearing dark trousers, a black top with a white adidas logo, as she left her front door.

Specialist teams - including an underwater search crew and RAF Mountain Rescue - had joined an extensive operation in Nidd Gorge, an ancient woodland on steep cliffs around three miles from Sophie's home.

In an update this morning, the force said that officers have discovered a body in the River Nidd, near Nidd Gorge.

The force said in a statement: "Police searching for missing Sophie Lambert in the Harrogate area have confirmed a body has been found in the River Nidd near Nidd Gorge on Wednesday morning.

"It is too early to confirm the identity, but Sophie’s family have been informed and are receiving specialist support.

"We ask that their privacy is respected. We thank everyone who has supported the missing person appeal over the last few days.

"A further update will be issued in due course."

Officers began scouring the area after some of Sophie's possessions were discovered nearby on Saturday.

Sophie's brother Craig had launched a fundraising page to help with the search, and a Facebook group was set up to try and spread the word.

Her sister Sarah previously wrote: "I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone that’s commented and helped on this group in the search for my sister, especially when I can’t get down there on a night due to my children being at home.

"Makes me feel some what comforted by knowing you're all down there looking for her. You're all truly genuinely amazing people."

Inspector Graham Walker, from North Yorkshire Police, earlier said that the force was "looking into all possibilities".
