Nothing beats the feeling of fresh bedding. The sheets are crisp, you're freshly showered and you're ready for the ultimate snooze - bliss.

Aside from the sheer satisfaction of fresh sheets, there are also other benefits to washing bedding regularly, such as needing to replace the bedding less often, which can save you some serious money.

The Sleep Foundation has estimated that the average person will spend 49 to 60 hours a week between the sheets (sometimes more!), meaning that your luxury sleep setup can soon become a hub for dirt, dust mites, dead skin cells, and sweat if you don't give your bedding a good wash often enough.

The London Fire Brigade has warned that a build-up of residue from emollients or skin creams on bedding can increase flammability, especially if you spend extended periods in bed due to impaired mobility.

As a rule, Which? recommends that you wash bedding covers once per week – that's bed sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers – at 60 degrees for most fabrics.

But sheets may need washing more frequently, depending on how you use your bed.

And if you suffer from allergies, you may wish to wash bedding more frequently as it can help to alleviate your pesky symptoms.

But there are things that you can do to ensure that your bedding stays as fresh as possible between washes.

A study by North London Waste Authority (NLWA) found that a quarter of people have pets sleeping in their beds, and a fifth of people eat in bed regularly.

Shockingly, one in 10 people reported actually brushing their teeth in bed - which can cause some serious stains.

If you refrain from the above, your bed sheets can stay nicer for longer without you having to be concerned.

How often do you wash your bedding? Let us know in the comments.
