For some people, the airport is a catwalk, and passengers will take their time curating the perfect outfit so they can arrive at their destination looking cooler than ever.

You may take your time choosing the perfect footwear too, but other travellers prefer to plump for something comfortable and casual. From leggings to trainers, those who aren't as fussed by a fancy travel outfit want to be as comfy as possible when they're cruising in the air.

But flight attendants have warned that there are certain items of footwear and clothing that should be avoided while on the plane - if you want an upgrade to first class, that is.

Former flight attendant Celina Bedding told the Express that if you want an upgrade to first class, there are certain items of clothing that are best to "avoid."

The ex-crew member shared that casual items of clothing should be avoided at all costs, including leggings and flip-flops. Instead, passengers should aim to "dress smarter", as this way, they are more likely to be moved into luxury.

Celina shared that when they are choosing passengers to be upgraded, they're looking for people who "won't disturb the other passengers that actually paid for those expensive seats."

To get around the dress code without feeling too restricted, she suggested that a good plane uniform is a blazer and jeans - the definition of smart casual.

"Long dresses also look nice", if that's more your style - especially in the hot summer months.

Open-toed shoes, sandals, and flip-flops should apparently be avoided at all costs - despite the fact they're easier to slip off if you get stopped at security.

And it's bad news for leggings lovers, as Celina said you should "never" wear them, or sweatpants, as they're too casual.

Another flight attendant previously warned that wearing leggings could also prove dangerous due to the material.

Aviation expert Christine Negroni has said that wearing leggings could lead passengers to struggle if there is an emergency on board the flight as the pants could "burn and stick to you" if there's a fire.
