Marcus Rashford is close to agreeing a new contract extension with Manchester United worth nearly £100million.

The United striker has one year left on his current deal, but it is understood he is ready to pen to paper on a new agreement worth around £375,000-a-week.

The new contract, believed to be a five-year deal with the option of an extra year, will make Rashford United's highest-paid player, replacing goalkeeper David De Gea.

De Gea is out of contract at the end of this month and looks to be on his way out of United, after failing to agree a new deal on reduced terms of around £175,000-a-week.

Rashford's new deal reflects his emergence as one of United's most important players, with the 25-year-old having plundered a career-best haul of 30 goals for the club last season – a remarkable turnaround from the previous campaign, when he scored just five times.

That 30-goal return - and 11 assists - helped United secure third place and an immediate return to the Champions League, as well as ending the club's six-year wait for a trophy with the Carabao Cup.

The England star had attracted interest from Paris St Germain, but Rashford's intention was always to stay at United and continue his key role in Erik ten Hag's revival of the fallen giants.

A new No.9 is at the top of Ten Hag's transfer wishlist with a host of names linked with Old Trafford, including England skipper Harry Kane.

Tottenham are unlikely to let Kane join a Premier League rival while Victor Osimhen, Rasmus Hojlund and Randal Kolo Muani have all emerged as alternatives.

Ten Hag is also set to move for a new No.1 with De Gea seemingly heading for the exit after 12 seasons at Old Trafford. He won the Golden Glove last season, awarded to the goalkeeper with the most Premier League clean sheets, but his campaign was marred by a series of high-profile and costly individual mistakes.

United have already been looking at replacements for De Gea, with Everton and England No.1 Jordan Pickford, Porto and Portugal's first-choice Diogo Costa, as well as Inter Milan's Cameroon stopper Andre Onana all on their short-list.
