When it comes to travelling by plane, you want to make sure that you're wearing clothes you feel comfortable in, as you'll be sitting in a rather cramped environment for several hours and don't want to be stuck wearing something that's too tight or that makes you too hot.

So while it makes sense to ditch tights and skinny jeans, you might think that a plane journey is a perfect place to throw on a pair of flowy wide-leg trousers that are light and super breathable - but you'd be wrong.

According to flight attendants, wide-leg trousers are among the worst things you can possibly wear, as they come with some nasty consequences if you're likely to want to use the toilet during your flight.

Mamamia spoke to several flight attendants and frequent flyers about the clothing they'd never recommend anyone wears on a plane, and among the top 12 items was wide-leg trousers, as they would always recommend elasticated trousers that won't drag on the floor when you use the bathroom.

A woman named Kerstin said: "Wear pants/trousers with an elasticated or close-fitted hem. You don't want anything touching the floor of the toilet (or the floor anywhere, for that matter)."

The toilet problem is also the reason why onesies and overalls were listed as an item never to be worn on planes, as well as forming the basis of one woman's argument for never taking your shoes off.

A flight attendant said: "Never wear a onesie! Going to the toilet will be a nightmare, and the top half that you've had to strip off will fall in whatever gross stuff is on the floor in the toilet."

"No jumpsuits," another agreed, "The pee complexity in a tiny aeroplane bathroom is too much!"

While Katie Ellen, a flight attendant, argued: "Never wear socks into the lavatory. Put your shoes back on!"

Elsewhere, jeans were listed as the number one thing you should never wear on a plane, as your legs and stomach are likely to swell while you're on the plane, making jeans an absolute nightmare.

For the same reason, many flight attendants also suggested not wearing compression pants or tights, as these can also be made more uncomfortable by swelling.

On the more practical side, passengers were also told not to wear "ear loop face masks" on long flights as they can start to hurt after a few hours, so you should try opting for a face mask that ties over the head and behind the neck, as this won't pull on your ears.

However, while comfort is key when travelling, one flight attendant did admit that if they're looking for people to upgrade to any spare business class seats they might have, they'll always look for "well-dressed" individuals.

They explained: "On international flights if we have spare business seats to upgrade regular Joes, we would be instructed to upgrade the well-dressed and well-heeled."
