Neymar Jr has described his feelings as "bittersweet" after teammate and close friend Lionel Messi called time on his stay at Paris Saint-Germain.

The pair struck up a friendship during their time together in both the French capital and at former club Barcelona but are set to spend next season on separate continents. After signing off with a second Ligue 1 title in as many years, legendary Argentinian forward Messi has decided to move to MLS to join Inter Miami this summer.

In what is likely to be a game-changing transfer for the sport in the United States, the intrigue surrounding the 35-year-old's arrival has already reached monumental levels, with tickets to see the World Cup winner in action already sold out. As 'Messi Mania' sweeps the US, it is clear that the move has captured the public consciousness in a way that is largely unprecedented.

Of course, superstars have played stateside before, with David Beckham's switch to LA Galaxy back in 2007 probably the standout example prior to Messi's impending arrival. Now, PSG ace Neymar has now predicted that the transfer could have a transformative impact when it comes to increasing the popularity of the sport in the US.

The 30-year-old forward is, of course, fully aware of Messi's allure, having witnessed the fanfare that his presence commands both in Paris and in Barcelona. Speaking to NBA Brazil's YouTube channel, the Brazilian said: "I'm certain that Leo is going to change the league in the United States.

"I believe the league will become a lot more popular. So everyone has to take advantage and enjoy watching him play because unfortunately nothing lasts forever."

On a personal level, Neymar did admit that the move feels "bittersweet", given the strength of the friendship the pair have shared together during their trophy-laden careers. However, he did add that he is excited for the former Barcelona icon due to the lifestyle the switch to Florida is likely to allow his friend to lead.

He explained: "I'm sad and happy at the same time, I already knew. Messi is one of my best friends, a gift that soccer has given me. I had the opportunity to get to know him, to play with him and then, to build a beautiful friendship.

"So, I knew that he wanted to come here [Miami], and we spoke about it. I told him he was going to be very happy in the city, because of the style of life, the opportunity to come to live and play here in Miami. It will be very good but obviously it was a bit bittersweet to see him leave."
