'Explosion' sparks massive fire with huge plumes of black smoke filling sky

A massive fire has broken out in Leeds - with footage showing a huge plume of black smoke filling the sky.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman told the Mirror the blaze is at Moulds Patterns and Models Limited at Anchor Works in Swinnow Lane, in Bramley.

Unconfirmed reports suggest chemical tanks have exploded due to the heat.

Current temperature in the area is around 28C.

Witnesses say lots of sirens can be heard, while video shows a fireball.

Local residents are being warned to keep windows and doors closed.

One person said on Twitter: "Jeez. Massive explosion somewhere in Leeds. Can hear mini explosions like fireworks after."

They then added: "Oh god it was an explosion at a factory. Hope everyone is ok."

Another person said: "Apparently chemical tanks have gone up due to the heat."

There is also some suggestion staff vehicles parked outside the unit have exploded.

The fire service said on social media: "5 WYFRS appliances are currently in attendance at an incident in Bramley, Leeds, which has created a huge plume of black smoke.

"Those in the surrounding areas are advised to close windows & doors due to the smoke. Please also avoid the area."

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters are in attendance at a fire at a plastics factory on Anchor Works in Swinnow Lane, Bramley.

"We received several calls at around noon today to the incident.

“Crews are in attendance from Stanningley, Leeds and Rawdon along with two engines from Bradford.

"Due to large amount of smoke in the area we are advising people to keep windows and doors closed and also to avoid the area if possible.”
