Manchester United treble winner Peter Schmeichel gave an unexpected opinion on the possibility of Manchester City matching the achievement, claiming Pep Guardiola's side have played some of the best football he has ever seen.

Schmeichel won the Champions League, FA Cup, and Premier League in 1999 with the Red Devils, a feat not reached by another English team until City's 1-0 win in Istanbul over Inter Milan, with Rodri scoring the winner.

"It's been a long time since we did that in 1999," Schmeichel said on CBS of his own treble success. "It was probably the best period of my professional life. No doubt about that. I was extremely proud of making supporters so happy. It's something we've been talking about ever since."

Schmeichel also played for City at the back end of his career between 2002-03 but is remembered overwhelmingly for his time at Old Trafford. "Man City have been playing so well this season and actually having the chance, one more win away from that [treble], has brought all that back," he added. "I can't remember having talked about it [the 1999 treble] as much as I have in the last two weeks. And if it's broken by Manchester City you just have to hold your hands up because they have been absolutely fantastic this year."

The legendary Dane then went on to give an unexpected opinion on Pep Guardiola's treble-winning team before kick-off, claiming they've played the best football he has ever seen. "They have played the best football," Schmeichel said. "Only going back to the semifinal at the Etihad, the first 45 minutes are probably the best half of football I have ever seen. It will be well deserved. But they've got to go past Inter Milan which is no easy task."

Guardiola is regarded as one of the best managers of all time. The Spaniard, who also won a treble with Barcelona said: "I'm tired, calm and satisfied. It's so difficult to win. It was written in the stars. It belongs to us."

Goalscorer Rodri described winning the Champions League as "a dream come true", with his sweet strike in the 68th minute separating the two sides. "It's emotional. A dream come true. All these guys around here waited I don't know how many years," Rodri told BT Sport.

"They deserve it, we deserve it. The last years we were so close. I just want to thank everyone. It wasn't easy. What a team we faced, the way they defend and counter-attack.

"We gave everything. Finals are like this. You can't expect to play as well as always. Emotions and nerves are there. We competed like animals. It's a dream. This moment will never happen again."
