Shadow Minister Bambos Charalambous has been suspended by Labour following a complaint over his conduct.

The frontbencher confirmed in a statement that he was being investigated by the party following an allegation made against him.

It is understood that a complaint was made under the party's independent's complaints process, triggering an administrative suspension.

The Enfield Southgate MP automatically loses the whip under the rules, meaning he now sits as an independent MP.

He has also been stood down from his role on the Shadow Foreign Affairs team.

In a statement, Mr Charalambous said: "I am aware that there is an allegation that requires investigation by the Labour Party.

"It is right and proper that process is allowed to take place. I will cooperate fully and play my full part.

"It is not appropriate to say anything further at this time."

A Labour spokeswoman declined to comment.

Mr Charalambous, a former solicitor, has been an MP since 2017.

Keir Starmer appointed him as Shadow Minister for the Middle East and North Africa in 2021.

It comes a week after MP Geraint Davies also had the party whip suspended following "incredibly serious allegations of completely unacceptable behaviour".

Five women alleged they were subjected to unwanted sexual attention from the Swansea West MP, first reported by Politico.

At the time a Labour spokeswoman said: "These are incredibly serious allegations of completely unacceptable behaviour.

"We strongly encourage anyone with a complaint to come forward to the Labour Party's investigation.

"Any complainant will have access to an independent support service who provide confidential and independent guidance and advice from external experts throughout the process."

Mr Davies said in a statement that he did not recognise the allegations or know who had made them.

He said: “If I have inadvertently caused offence to anyone, then I am naturally sorry as it is important that we share an environment of mutual and equal respect for all.”
