Figuring out how often you need to wash your hair is never quite as straightforward as it should be.

But once you've tallied up the days - after any beach trips and gym sessions are accounted for - you'll likely want to double your number.

According to one hairdresser, most of us wash out hair half the number of times we really ought to. As a result, our tresses could be going without the thorough clean required.

Highlighting the common mistake in a post to TikTok as @amy.does.some.hair, the former hair stylist explained you should lather up twice every time you clean your locks, if you want to 'wash your hair like a pro'.

Amy advised: "Thoroughly wet your hair, spread the shampoo over your hands and evenly distribute the shampoo all over your scalp.

"Using the tips of your fingers, massage the shampoo all over your scalp. Don't miss your hairline or nape.

"Rinse and repeat. Focus on the scalp. Use the suds to gently pass through the ends."

She also recommended going in with conditioner after completing your shampoo routine. Thankfully, there are no extra steps. Condition your hair as normal - making sure to avoid the roots - and you should be all set.

Or as to pro put it: "Apply conditioner to the ends, avoiding the roots. Let it sit for a minute or two, [then do a] cool rinse if you can stand it."

Blown away by the results, impressed commenters revealed it can make all the difference to your blowout.

One replied: "I was curious and tried this, and my hair is super soft and feels cleaner. Excuse me, what?"

A second added: "I have oily hair and actually noticed a difference shampooing twice! Felt and looked cleaner."

Someone also found that the trick helped to prevent dandruff. "My life changed when I did it twice," they wrote. "Well actually, I use a scrub for my scalp first and then shampoo, but no more dandruff for me!"
