Indianapolis Colts star Isaiah Rodgers is being investigated by the NFL for possibly gambling on games, it has been claimed.

In a statement on Monday, the Colts acknowledged the inquiry by the league, as they made a statement without naming any player. The franchise said: "We are aware of the NFL's investigation and will have no further comment at this time."

With the player not known, with NFL and the Colts choosing not to confirm, Rodgers appeared to declare that it had been himself who violated the league's betting policies.

In a tweet, he wrote: "I know I have made mistakes and I am willing to do whatever it takes to repair the situation. The last thing I ever wanted to do was to be a distraction to the Colts organization, my coaches, and my teammates. I've let people down that I care about.

"I made an error in judgment and I am going to work hard to make sure that those mistakes are rectified through this process. It's an honor to play in the NFL and I have never taken that lightly. I am very sorry for all of this."

ESPN have since reported that an account was opened under the name of one of Rodgers' associates, with around 100 bets being placed - including on Colts games. While most bets were around $25-50 (£17-£40), at least one had been a four-figure stake.

The NFL has a zero-tolerant stance on NFL stars betting on games, with three players from the Detroit Lions handed suspensions in April, while Jacksonville Jaguars superstar Calvin Ridley was suspended for the entire 2022 season.

Rodgers missing from the upcoming season would be a huge blow for the Colts, after he put together an extremely impressive season last year - being ranked as one of the top cornerbacks in the league by PFF.

He was slated for a starting role this season, but could miss the whole campaign if indeed found guilty of what is being alleged. This could leave the Colts short at the position, potentially pushing second-round rookie Julius Brents into a starting role.

An NFL spokesperson, when asked by ESPN for comment on the report, said in a text message that they had "nothing to add."
