A huge fire has ripped through an apartment complex in Las Vegas Valley, sending huge plumes of smoke in the air.

The fire broke out at 5:04am (local time) on Tuesday at a building located near Charleston and Torrey Pines in Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, US.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and put out the fire, while huge plumes of smoke circled the area surrounding the building.

Part of the ceiling has collapsed and six people have been transported to a hospital. One firefighter was also taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Six people were transported to University Medical Center Southern Nevada. Of those, two are in serious but stable condition and four are in stable condition.

The building is a total loss after it was completely destroyed in the blaze, according to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

Authorities said that 14 people are displaced from the building and nine more could also be displaced, depending on whether maintenance can repair the two buildings that were exposed to the disaster.

Footage from the scene shows firefighters on ladder trucks spraying the fire from above in an effort to place it under control.

The circumstances under which the fire broke out are unknown as of yet and authorities are investigating to determine the cause.

At 6:42am local time the fire was put out and "all clears were sent", according to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue said in a statement provided to the Mirror: "At 5:04 a.m. Las Vegas Fire and Rescue began receiving reports of a fire at 6501 E. Charleston (The Tides - Apartment complex)

"LVFR Crews arrived on the scene within minutes. The second alarm was called within 5 minutes.

"Six patients have been transported for physical injuries. One Firefighter has been transported with minor injuries.

"Primary all clears were sent at 6:42 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation."

They added later: "Six (6) people were transported to UMC: Two (2) are in serious but stable condition. Four (4) individuals in stable condition.

"One building is a total loss to buildings that have exposure damage. Fourteen (14) individuals will be displaced from the building fire

"Nine (9) individuals are pending displaced, depending on whether maintenance can repair those two exposed buildings."

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has also been contacted for updates.

The building's roof has completely caved in to the menacing flames.

Reporter Kelly Curran tweeted earlier: "The roof of an apartment building has collapsed near Charleston and Torrey Pines because of a fire.

"Two ladder trucks are still putting water on it and there is a of of smoke hanging in the air. No word yet on injuries"
