The Girl From Ipanema singer Astrud Gilberto dies as family pays tribute
Bossa nova singer Astrud Gilberto - best known for her recognisable recording of The Girl From Ipanema - has died aged 83.
The singer died on June 5, her son Marcelo confirmed to The Independent.
Her cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
Her granddaughter Sofia also paid tribute to the singer, and in a post on Instagram wrote: "My grandma Astrud Gilberto made this song for me, it’s called ‘Linda Sofia’. She even wanted my name to be Linda Sofia!”
"Life is beautiful, as the song says, but I’m here to bring you the sad news that my grandmother became a star today, and is next to my grandfather João Gilberto.

The singer released 16 albums during her career (Bettmann Archive)“Astrud was the true girl who took bossa nova from Ipanema to the world. She was a pioneer and the best," Sofia sweetly wrote.
"Astrud will forever be in our hearts, and right now we have to celebrate Astrud.”
The singer recorded 16 studio albums since her career began in the 1960s, and her iconic track, The Girl from Ipanema, sold more than five million copies worldwide, and was a huge global hit.
The song earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Vocal Performance by a female in 1964, the same year the track won a Grammy for Song of the Year.
Gilberto turned her back on Brazil after unfair criticism in the 1960s (Redferns)Her son Marcelo spoke out about the unfair criticism his mother received after the release of the song, and said she wasn't properly credited - or paid - for her work throughout her career, claiming that Gilberto earned just $120 for singing on The Girl from Ipanema.
She was also shunned by the Brazilian media, and furious over their treatment of her, she turned her back on her native country after a concert in 1965, and never performed again in Brazil.
“Brazil turned its back on her. She achieved fame abroad at a time when this was considered treasonous by the press," Marcelo told The Independent last year.
