Even if you haven't been to many weddings in your life, we all know that one of the biggest faux pas you can make is wearing white as a guest, as it's seen as disrespectful and a sign that you're trying to outshine the bride.

But it seems one mother of the groom didn't quite get the memo, as she turned up to her son's wedding wearing a white dress that some people have said looks like the sort of dress a bride would wear to her reception.

In pictures shared online, the dress appeared to be a short white number that had a second layer over the top made up of a mesh material covered in golden leaves, which finished at the ankles.

The images were posted on the Wedding Attire Approval forum on Reddit by the sister of the bride, who explained in the comments that the wedding happened a year ago, and that her sister was gobsmacked when her new mother-in-law arrived at the ceremony.

She wrote: "This was not a joke. She also did wear this dress and the wedding was a year ago. I just stumbled across this subreddit and wanted to hear everyone's opinion because my sister and I thought she was crazy for wearing it!"

One commenter asked her what the mum's relationship with her son is like as well as what her relationship with her new daughter-in-law is like, and while you might expect tensions to be high between them, they actually all get along fine.

The woman explained: "He was the oldest of 5 and the last boy to get married. They're a close family and they all get along with my sister, before and after the wedding! She's a super sweet lady but it was just such an odd choice and came out of left field."

Meanwhile, other commenters on the post were left completely baffled, with some saying the mum should be sent "straight to jail" for her wedding crimes, while others simply branded her "disrespectful".

One person wrote: "What's with the mums that want to wear a wedding dress? It's so disrespectful. As a mother-in-law myself, the rules of being a good MIL are simple: Don't try to compete [and] know your place."

While another added: "Straight to jail."

And a third fumed: "This is beyond inappropriate and I suspect she knows this but justifies it because her narcissistic need trumps the bride's feelings."
