A fast food worker has been arrested after a customer found a bag of cocaine in her hotdog after biting into it.

The woman had ordered a 'Coney' hotdog topped with chilli and melted cheese, from the Sonic Drive-In in Espanola, New Mexico, on Tuesday.

But when she took a bite of the cheesy hotdog she realised she had bitten into something that was definitely not meant to be there.

She quickly realised it was a plastic bag filled with powder and immediately called the police.

Police allege the fast food employee, identified as Jeffrey David Salazar, 54, accidentally dropped the suspected bag of cocaine while making the hotdog.

The woman doesn't think she ingested any of the substance, according to an incident report, reported the Rio Grande Sun.

Salazar faces a felony charge for possession of a controlled substance, according to the Espanola Police Department.

Police said a 'field test' identified the powder in the bag as cocaine.

On the day of the incident, Salazar was allegedly seen on CCTV in "what appeared to be a hand to hand transaction with a female employee", according to the arrest warrant.

In the CCTV, he could be seen preparing customer orders until he appears to discover something has gone missing and grows frantic.

According to the police report, Salazar claimed to have bought the cocaine outside the fast-food joint.

The customer is being legally represented by Merit Bennet of the Bennett Law Group. They have said they plan on submitting a claim once the reports are confirmed, the news outlet said.

Sonic is a US wide drive-in fast food chain with 3,500 stores across 46 states.

It is best known for its menu items such as "extra-long cheese coneys" and "toaster sandwiches".
