A Tennessee man has shared his weight loss journey after deciding to chomp down three McDonald's meals a day for 100 days.

Kavin Maginnis, from Nashville, managed to shed an impressive 58.5 lbs and now weighs 179.5 lbs.

The 56-year-old said he he “never got burned out” on his diet in which he would consume only half portions of the iconic fast food chain's produce.

He ate no fruit or vegetables apart from the lettuce and tomato on burgers, the apples in the apple fritter, and the blueberries in the blueberry muffin.

On NBC’s Today show, Kevin said: "I was pre-diabetic before – down into healthy ranges now."

The TikTok star said he chose McDonald's in the first place because his nickname was "Big Mac" and he thought it would be a good fit.

The interesting diet lasted over three months and his wife even joined him for the last 60 days and lost 17 pounds, but despite the success, Kevin admitted the food plan is probably not sustainable.

"Don’t be bitter while I’m eating my apple fritter and losing weight," he joked, before adding that he part of his secret was eating only half the provided food in each meal and sticking to water rather than soda.

“Half a plate to lose the weight – three-quarters of a plate to maintain the weight, any food, including McDonald’s,” Maginnis said.

Not snacking between meals was also key to the success along with no alcohol.

The excess wasn't just confined to the weight Kevin lost and he also said his cholesterol was down along with his triglycerides, fat that circulates in the blood.

He added: "You could do this with any food. Stop vilifying the food. It's not that 'good food, bad food' for weight loss. Are there better macronutrients and micronutrients for brain health or whatever?

"Absolutely. But when it comes to getting rid of obesity, reduce the size of the meals. Three meals, cut in half — it's not the only way, it's a way. Portion control, have a plan, and have some accountability."

His weight loss journey went viral on TikTok, where Kevin has an account under the 'bigmaccoaching' username.

He says he isn't done with his weight loss goals, although he will likely drop his McDonald's diet.

"Round one was to eliminate the obesity. Round two is increase the beast in me," he added. "I'm going to be doing an ice plunge, I'm going to do a 100 ft rope climb in 100 days. I never made it 10 ft in gym class, so it's my personal Everest. I'm going to climb a 100 ft rope in 100 days."

Lindsay Allen, MS, RDN, a dietitian specialising in metabolic health and weight loss, told Fox News Digital that there were a couple of obvious problems with the fast-food meal plan.

"Eventually, the person's metabolism can drop up to 30% when they restrict calories for too long," she said.

"Then, when the person starts eating normal portions again, they will regain the weight right away. This is exactly why fad diets and calorie-reduction diets fail."

The second problem, Allen said, is that Maginnis missed out on key nutrients that the body needs for optimal health.

"When the brain senses that the body isn’t getting enough , it will ramp up hunger hormones in an attempt to take in more essential nutrients," she said.

"If you give your body nothing but cheap, processed food, it’s going to sense this and encourage you to take in more food."
