Two Texas teens have been charged after triggering multiple evacuations at their school by allegedly releasing a noxious "fart spray".

David Navarrete-Arce, 17, and Diego Flores, 18 were arrested on May 12.

Both have been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and local reports indicate it is a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The arrests come after an odour was detected at Caney Creek High School on May 3, leading to the evacuation of the school by the fire department.

Classes continued the next day, but the school had to be evacuated once again due to the sickening stench at around 12pm.

The grim smell meant the school has to remain closed until May 5 and school officials said six students had to be sent to hospital.

They complained of experiencing headaches and feeling nauseated and a number of other students reported feeling ill.

Caney Creek, around 45 miles north of Houston, had to be combed over by experts to try and locate the smell, but the cause could not be found.

No gas leaks appeared to be present when the school was searched, but the alleged culprits were singled out when a student supposedly confessed to Caney Creek Fire & Rescue they brought in a fart spray.

The fire service said on Facebook: "We just received notice from Caney Creek High School. Due to the hard work of Caney Creek High School Staff and Conroe ISD Police, a student confessed to bringing a highly concentrated, prank, stink spray called Hensgaukt Fart Spray.

"Caney Creek Fire & Rescue is proud to serve and protect all Students and Staff at Caney Creek High School."

An arrest affidavit said law enforcement looked a CCTV and saw Navarrete-Arce appearing to "drop and pick up an item and shows the item in his hand appeared to be a small spray can".

The 17-year-old allegedly admitted to spraying the can in various parts of the school before handing the can to a student he reportedly refused to name.

Both teens have been released on a $3,000 bond.

Caney Creek Fire & Rescue said they responded to seven 911 calls at the school. They also extended their thanks to the thank you letters received from students Caney Creek.

Fire Chief Raymond Flannelly said: "On May 22, 2023, I was handed just over 70 thank you letters from students in various grades at Caney Creek High School.

"As a 42-year veteran of the Fire Service I have never received this type of thanks from anyone. I have read every letter thoroughly and am overwhelmed by the support you, the students, have shown for this organization and your school."
