Ed Sheeran surprised a group of high school students with a "once in a lifetime opportunity" as he gifted them tickets to one of his sold-out shows.

The 32-year-old singer treated band students at Middleton High School in Tampa, Florida to free tickets for his concert at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday night.

The students had been busy learning Ed's songs and were shocked to see him show up at their class.

Ed donated several guitars to the school's music department and happily posed for selfies and signed autographs.

Music teacher Abraham Tejeda said you could "just see the joy" in the students as they were star struck by the famous songwriter.

Describing the meeting as a "truly great experience," he added: "Having Ed Sheeran come into our classroom and playing for those kids and offering them tickets to the concert was literally a lifetime opportunity."

Torrey Williams, MHS Marching Tiger Band head drum major, said some of the students had never even been to a concert before receiving the free tickets.

"It was crazy. It was like it was surreal, really. He just appeared, and it was really just like a moment that I'll never forget," Torrey told Fox 13 as he recalled the experience.

Abraham said the school band has sometimes been "looked down to because we've been a smaller band", but said it was a "huge blessing" to be supported by Ed.

Ed shared the sweet encounter on Instagram and wrote: "Surprised the kids at Middleton high school in Tampa today with some free @sheeranguitars and tickets to tomorrows show.

"What a great afternoon, such talented lovely kids. Enjoy the show!"

Fans were blown away by Ed's generosity, with one person commenting: "I love how you’re using your music to inspire our young people and doing it in person. Others may have just sent them the guitars and tickets. You? You show up! And I mean show up!!!!!"

"God i love this guy," another gushed.
