A dad "who touched many hearts" died after contracting a serious infection from a tattoo leaving his family distraught.

Cleveland Police confirmed Ben Larry, 32, died due to having a tattoo using unhygienic equipment on May 6.

The force warned the public about the dangers of using unofficial tattoo artists following the tragic incident.

Mr Larry's family has now paid tribute to someone who was "loved by everyone".

They said: “Our precious, adored, kind and caring son was loved by everyone. He touched so many hearts. No parent should lose a child, no child should lose their Daddy and no grandparent should lose a grandchild.

“Our hearts are broken, we are so lucky to have our two beautiful grandsons to keep his legacy and our memories of him alive.”

Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and are working closely with Middlesbrough Council.

On Sunday, May 7, Cleveland Police told people of the risks of unhygienic equipment used by unlicensed tattooists.

It said: "Cleveland Police are warning the public of the dangers of unlicensed tattooists, following a recent case where a customer contracted a serious infection as a result of unhygienic equipment.

"Officers are urging people to check the Body Art register prior to visiting a tattooist. If you are still unsure whether they are registered, you can check with your local council.

"If you have concerns that you may have been tattooed in unhygienic conditions, or have symptoms of infection after getting a tattoo, please seek medical attention immediately and report concerns to your local council."

Heartfelt messages have flooded social media paying tribute to the 32-year-old following his sudden passing.

One person wrote on Facebook: "Heartbreaking that. Rest in peace Ben Larry top lad you where mate: sending my love to your family. God bless ya."

Another said: "Rip Ben Larry honestly can't get over it. Remember people if you're going to get a tattoo please, please, please go to a proper tattoo parlour!"
