A bride's mum has been slammed for her meddling behaviour after she invited kids to her daughter's wedding behind her back.

The soon-to-be newlyweds planned their adults-only wedding months in advance, as they're jetting off to the Caribbean for the nuptials.

So you can imagine their family's surprise when they were told children could attend last minute - just a few days ahead of the big event.

Unfortunately, it transpired the bride's mum sent the invites without her permission - and she had to retract the offer soon after. As revealed in a post to Reddit by a baffled family member, the situation was more than a little awkward for the bride.

"My cousin is getting married in the Caribbean next week. A lot of people in the family were invited but it ended up a small adults only wedding - the more I think about it, the more this was obviously by design," she wrote.

"We're planning to fly out on Thursday, tickets have been booked months in advance, etc. and yesterday I get a family group text from my aunt saying that due to the number of inquiries she has received, new update - children ARE in fact invited."

However, the aunt said invites were for relatives only and told the group to keep the news 'between the family'. "I noticed that my cousin was not among the people in the group text," the wedding guest added.

"Today I got an awkward call from my cousin who told us my aunt didn't discuss this with her or her fiancé in advance, just decided this by herself, and that they, the couple, only planned for the less-than-20 RSVPs. So yeah, my aunt just did that."

Stunned by the story, commenters were less than impressed by what they heard. One person replied: "Why do people have to try to control other people's events? Your poor cousin."

A second wrote: "Shame on your aunt. Not your event = you don't get to decide anything."

Meanwhile, someone else added: "Does she have grandkids? If so probably why she did this." But another said: "Oh boy! give your cousin an extra hug! Hopefully her mom will calm down a bit."
