The new Disney remake of children's classic The Little Mermaid seems to take a subtle swipe at Kate Middleton, which comes after Meghan Markle said in an interview that she identifies with Princess Ariel.

Starring Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy and Jonah Hauer-King, the live-action adaptation of the hit cartoon movie has been enjoying premieres around the world ahead of its release on May 26.

And it has emerged that the remake of the classic fairytale, which was originally written by Hans Christian Andersen and animated as a feature-length film in 1989, takes a subtle swipe at the British Royal Family.

Speaking to an American outlet after attending an early screening, a reviewer has spilled alleges that the movie seems to touch on the British royal family

The film critic spoke to Page Six and revealed that there are a number of comparisons between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, with a couple of "digs" thrown in about the Royal Family.

In one scene from the movie, Ariel is unable to speak and Prince Eric attempts to guess her name.

"His first guess is Diana. His second guess is Catherine, but after [Ariel gives a disgusted] reaction, he [concludes] ‘OK, definitely not Catherine,'" the reviewer reveals.

The film critic went on to add: "Disney would be disingenuous to imply those name choices were coincidental."

Meanwhile, Duchess of Sussex Meghan famously said that she identified with Ariel in her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Chatting to Oprah, Meghan recalled how she had watched the 1989 version of The Little Mermaid after her wedding Prince Harry in 2018.

Recalling the moment, she said: "I went, ‘Oh my God, she falls in love with the prince and because of that she loses her voice'."

This comes after Meghan received the Ms Foundation Women of Vision Award on Tuesday night (May 16), for "her global advocacy to empower and advocate on behalf of women and girls".

At the glitzy gala in New York, journalist and social activist Gloria Steinem presented the former actress, who donned a golden frock, with the coveted prize.

Mirror US has reached out to Disney for a comment regarding the claims.
